Nepal has experienced an abundance of natural disasters in the past few years, including landslides, earthquakes, storms, mountain collapses, floods, and now, historic volcanic eruptions. The nation’s sensitivity to natural calamities including variations in the river system and monsoon rains is increased by its location in the southern Himalayas. The nation is seriously threatened by the disturbing yearly rate of mountain decline, which can range from 0.3 to 1 percent. Local communities suffer from the effects of landslides and glacier erosion, which can result in deaths, damage to property, agricultural setbacks, flood shortages, and increased seismic risk, particularly in the Jaryak Himalayas. It is estimated that 80% of people are susceptible to these kinds of calamities.
The Effects on Economy and Health: Climate change’s effects extend beyond natural disasters. The number of diseases linked to climate change is increasing in Nepal. The incidence of diseases such parasite hepatitis, malaria, lymphatic filariasis, schistosomiasis, dysentery, respiratory infections, jaundice, and typhoid is rising despite numerous protection and prevention initiatives at the governmental, non-governmental, and community levels. The rise of a chronic, high-risk, integrated illness profile has put tremendous strain on the healthcare system.
International Frameworks and National Projects: In order to address the social and economic effects of climate change, Nepal has actively participated in international frameworks. The country’s strategy has been greatly influenced by the United Nations Framework Convention (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement. The National Action Plan (NAP 2021–2050), the Disaster Risk and Management Act (2017), and the National Climate Change Policy (NCCP) all highlight how important it is to prioritize climate-related issues. Nepal’s efforts to minimize climate-induced issues are aided by the Climate Change Coordination Committee, environmental protection, and climate change management measures.
Workshop on the Effects of Climate Change: To raise awareness of the urgent problems Nepal faces, a workshop will be held. The purpose of this platform is to collect opinions on the effects of climate change on the economy and health from experts, academics, and healthcare workers. Coming up with creative solutions for adaptation, prevention, and sustainability will be the main goal. The goal of the workshop is to spur cooperation and a group response to the problems that climate change has brought about in Nepal.
