The objective of the sight conservation program is to protect, preserve, and restore the sight of children through the following activities:

  i. School-based eye care program
        - Training primary school teachers to screen school children for visual defects. 
        -  Establishing Vision clubs in secondary schools to train senior students as Little Optometrists. 
        -  Professional eye care services including refraction services by trained optometrists/Ophthalmic Assistants and ophthalmologists. 
        -  Eye Health Promotion, nutrition supplement, and de-worming in schools in partnership with national programs.

  ii. Community-based eye care Program
        - Dedicated children’s eye camps Training of FCHV and orientation of health facility staff Eye Health Promotion in the community.

  iii. Capacity building of health system to provide eye care for children. 
 

                

 i. Guidelines for parents of newly diagnosed BVI children. 
 ii. Guidebook for resource teachers in integrated/ inclusive schools.
 iii. Standard list for resource rooms in integrated/inclusive schools. 
 iv. Multimedia kit-
      - For policymakers 
      - For school students/ resource and regular teachers. 
      - For mothers/ grandmothers. 
      - For DPHO/ Health post-in-charge.

 v. Posters on eye health education. vi. Poster on status of Education of BVI children. vii. Poster on causes of Blindness among BVI Children studying in special/integrated/Inclusive schools of Nepal. viii. Test type development.

     i. Handover of building by September 2012.
    ii. Installation of equipment by November 2012. 
    iii. Recruitment of human resource by November 2012. 
    iv. At service to the public by December 2012.

20 inclusive schools for the education of BVI children in the Western Region of Nepal are being supported by a Rotary funded project. The schools will
be provided with Braille typewriter and other teaching-learning materials to improve the quality of education these children are receiving. The first phase
of the program was held in Nepalgunj in June 2012. Twelve teachers from nine project districts participated in a week-long refresher training wherein 
they were handed over with the educational materials for their schools. Another phase has been scheduled for October 2012 in Dhangadhi where teachers from six districts will participate.
