About Us

B.P. Eye Foundation (BPEF), established in 1991, is a Nepalese national non-governmental organization, formally registered with appropriate national authorities.

It works in the area of Health, Education and Empowerment of people with disability. In its early years the Foundation focused its attention on expansion and improvement in quality of eye care services through training of Ophthalmologists and Optometrists. The Foundation established a center of excellence - B.P. Koirala Lions Center for Ophthalmic Studies at Institute of Medicine which has turned out 110 ophthalmologist (which is three Quarter of all Nepali ophthalmologists) and 75 Optometrist (85% of all Nepali Optometrists) who are now key personnel manning all the eye hospitals of Nepal and have earned Nepal a reputation and niche in global eye health.

In recent years the foundation’s focus has shifted to children’s health, with sensory impairment as an entry point, and it has successfully established a Children’s Hospital for Eye Ear and Rehabilitation Services (CHEERS) in Bhaktapur. CHEERS started providing clinical and rehabilitative services in December 2012, and so far has shown promising results in terms of screening disabilities, key actor trainings, treatment of the treatable disabling conditions, and enabling 26 blind children between ages of 3 to 6 years to integrate in normal governmental schools through rehabilitation for the first time in the country, opening the doors to early childhood development which had remained closed hitherto.

P. C. Karmacharya

Chairman, B.P. Eye Foundation

Our story is twenty five years old. My inspiration is as new as it was then. Of the Board of Trustees, Mr Anang Man Serchan, Dr. Laxmi Narayan Prasad and Dr. Nabin Chandra Rai are no more with us. I solemnly salute them for their contribution in the initial phase of establishment with authoritative work. I am privileged to sail with Prof. Ganesh Raj Singh, Dr. Gauri Sanker Lal Das, Prof. Suprbha Ghimire, Prof. Lok Raj Baral, Prof. Dr. Madan Prasad Upadhayay and Prof. Dr. Shashank Koirala. Needless to say that the likeminded galaxy of veterans from different walks of life have been a great assest to the Foundation. I have been down-right a primary care physician and a comprehensive Ophthalmologist by profession. Switching on from Government to Semi-Government job in the university services was relatively easy. But to tread the path of Non-Government Organization has been and still is a very uncomfortable journey for me. In doing so, let me confess that this dwarf always have had the opportunity of standing on the shoulders of these giants. My immediate predecessor, Chairman Emeritus Prof. Dr. Madan Prasad Upadhyay is still actively involved making my task easy. He has played a pivotal role in bringing the Foundation from an abstract form to this height of glory.

Now he has passed on the mantle to the new team. We seriously understand that this transfer is not just replacing an old calendar with the new one. As an incumbent chairman, it is definitely an honor for me and my team to felicitate you all. We bring the goodwill and cheers from the Foundation. With optimistic feelings, we seek your guidance and meaningful co-operation to move forward and fulfill the future challenges.
